she and i

she and i

my girl is asleep
and i have nothing but words of praise
in my thoughts
in her gaze
i have changed

and i know you have not,
so the book in your car
is a lie you wrought

you could try if you want

i gave her a name
you’d have taken away
you are still just the same;
you have plenty of pride left

i wished you the best
then released from my chest
all the deep unrest

my pride is gone

how she has repaired
what was hurt for years
with an ease that you never seemed to know

but since you’re concerned,
i also did my part
these roots have taken heart
to grow

so don’t be amazed
if these cantos are strange;
i’ve expanded my range
and found a voice,

and suddenly though
i was longing to shout,
all that comes out is
“her and me”

how i have a fear
if you linger too long here
you’ll never understand what this should be

for me, it appears
in a woman i revere
and all else will disappear
from memory
